Documentation to construct a SIMPLE RS-232 to I2C ADAPTER  is available for FREE DOWNLOAD. For advanced users, the 'C' Language Source Code is available for low-cost purchase.

This adapter is ideal for evaluating TareTronics SMART LED DISPLAY MODULES. It may also be used to transmit hex data bytes or ASCII strings to any I2C Slave device. To demonstrate capabilities of the SMART LED DISPLAY MODULE, the adapter can periodically measure and display the ambient temperature.

Description

  • Interfaces to an RS-232 Serial Port on a PC.
  • Interfaces to a standard 100 KHz I2C Bus as a transmit only Master Device.
  • Uses HyperTerminal (available on most Windows operating systems).
  • Hex data bytes and ASCII character strings may be transmitted to I2C Slave devices (such as SMART LED DISPLAY MODULES).
  • The I2C Acknowledge bit is read to indicate success or failure of transmission.
  • Command code 'ctrl T' will cause the ADAPTER to display ambient temperature on SMART LED DISPLAY MODULES.
  • Requires a 5 VDC regulated power supply.

Construction Documentation

The ADAPTER uses a Microchip PIC16F872; a MAX232; and an LM34 temperature sensor. A small general purpose printed circuit board from Dontronics (their Part No. DT106) provides a convenient platform for construction, although a solderless breadboard may also be used. Information needed for construction and operation is available for FREE DOWNLOAD using the following links:

C Language Source Code

The firmware for the RS232 to I2C Adapter was written in the C Programming Language and compiled with a PIC C Compiler from Forest Electronic Developments in the UK.

Users who wish to modify or customize the operation of the RS232 to I2C Adapter will need this source code. Also, this source code illustrates successful interface of SMART LED Display Modules to a PIC microcontroller with an I2C peripheral. Finally, students or hobbyists may find this source code of interest as an example of programming a PIC microcontroller with a high level language.

Order your copy today !  A 3.5" diskette containing the commented source code in an ASCII file, a printed copy, and copies of the free download material will be promptly mailed. The C Compiler is NOT included. It may be purchased from Dontronics.
